Class News: 1963, Winter 2006

The AOG notified us, September 23rd, that Jim Weaver died on September 21st as the result of an aircraft accident near Pleasanton TX. A memorial service and funeral was held Wednesday September 28th at the Academy. Condolences may be sent to his family in care of his wife Mrs. Maria Weaver at 16407 Old Stable Rd, San Antonio TX 78247-4418. Jimmie Butler sent us an e-mail about the funeral ceremonies held at the Academy Cemetary and included a photograph of those classmates who attended. In his note Jimmie said “. . . a number of us who have settled near the Academy consider that when one of our classmates returns to the Academy for interment, this too is our place and our time. I would invite all of you to try to join us in the future when such sad returns occur.”  If you go to the Class Web Page, look under Guest Book, and you will find some additional information on Jim’s death provided by Garry Wallace.

At the USAFA ceremonies were 15th Squadron classmates: Dave Nuss and Warren Nogaki and Barney Bartlett’s son C4C Austin Bartlett. Other classmates there were Gordon Bredvik, Bob Donavan and Jim Gaston.

Jim Hauser and Ev Vaughn filled me in on a recent medical problem experienced by Bill Green. According to Ev, Bill suffered an Aortic Dissecting Aneurysm and at this writing was in intensive care. Ev reports that Bill’s wife, Lisa, says he is making progress. Ev suggests you can send cards and notes to Bill using the following address: Mr. William Green 13882 Knaus Rd, Lake Oswego, OR 97034-2138.

Earlier this month (October) Jim Hauser and Jimmie Butler attended the COPPERSTATE FLY-IN held at the Casa Grande, Arizona Airport. They were at the Fly-in to participate in the Author’s Corner (Jim’s creation). Both Jim and Jimmie had books on display at the event: A Certain Brotherhood by Jimmie and Building and Programming a Synthetic Vision Information System (SVIS) by Jim. A flyer found on the Fly-in Web Page had the following to say about Jim H’s book: “This book presents the software necessary to program an SVIS. A discussion of the necessary hardware is included.” Pretty heavy stuff! Casa Grande is not far from where we live in Tucson and I wanted to get up there and visit with the guys but failed to do so—didn’t follow my plan. Jim told me he flies his Aztec to and from Boulder to attend these Fly-ins including Oshkosh.

Jerry and Marsha Adinolfi sent us a good photograph taken during their recent cruise vacation to celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary.

Cut line: Marsha and Jerry

This was not your routine Caribbean cruise. Due to Marsha’s medical requirements they had to drive from Kansas to the embarkation point in Miami (1750 miles). Once on the boat they managed to avoid two hurricanes (Dennis and Emily) though Emily caused them to miss St. Thomas as a port of call. According to Jerry, Marsha had been bed ridden for 7 continuous months and this trip was a promise that if she got better, they'd go cruising....she got better! Things continue to keep Jerry busy as a parish priest and he claims his six years at the Pentagon seems like child's play in comparison.

Some short notes: Neil Sorenson attached a flyer to his e-mail for the Whidbey Woodworkers Guild show. Neil said he had a table in the show.  John and Susi Bellotte were in Germany this summer, in the Allgäu and, like the southeastern US; there has been a lot of rain and flooding in Europe. John also said that Susi recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery.  Bill Mitchell sent a press release that reported the sale of The Mitchell Group to Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc. Bill’s company based at Carmel-by-the-Sea had five offices located on the Monterey Peninsula and will now operate as Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc. in Northern California. Bill’s immediate plans are to spend more time with a fly rod.

If you recall the July 2005 version of this column, we reported on the decision making process taken by Stephanie Bacue (Ralph) to become a member of the Class of 2009. Well, Ralph and Virginia spent a weekend in Colorado during early September with Stephanie. They report having a great time and Stephanie is very happy and doing well. Stephanie says she made the right decision. Ralph also provided us a travel tip suggesting that if you're looking for a great get-away, that is 2.0 hours from the C Springs airport, check out the Tom Cat Guest Ranch (www.fourteenernet.com/tomcat/). He says the ranch is secluded, luxurious, and better than advertised. Their only complaint was being able to see but being unable to catch the "big ones".

Steve Dotson sent me the URL to his new, almost completed, Web Site for his book The Light On the Star_. Take a look: http://203.177.161.60/web/28909-DOTS/index.html.
Finally, I would like to apologize for a misprint in the September column. When discussing Hank Hoffman and Jeff Heal’s flight to Great Exuma you will see the word “Hand” when I obviously meant Hank. This occurred as a result of my poor proof reading. Truth be told what I was thinking about at the time was “Jeff was Captain and Good Hands Hank as First Officer.
That’s it. Linda and I hope to see some of you at the Army Game in November. Take Care.
